"Northing is going to be catastrophic in our lifetime, but it's a foretelling of what's to come in the future," LSU Chief of Geodesy Cliff Mugnier told the USA Today Network.
Since the last survey in 1989, New Orleans has dropped nearly 6 inches, the most of any city measured, USA Today reported.

star Irish PM ‘to listen’ to alternative proposals from next British PM on N. Ireland
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - 07-18-2019 04:36 PM - Replies (2)

rish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Thursday that he is willing to listen to alternative proposals from the next British prime minister on keeping Northern Ireland’s border open after Brexit, Reuters reported.

Varadkar said he was willing to meet the new prime minister as soon as he is selected by the ruling Conservative Party.

If they have “proposals that genuinely achieve the same outcome, I have to listen to them,” he told RTE broadcaster.

“The objectives are that Brexit should not lead to the emergence of a hard border between north and south, that the right of citizens in Northern Ireland are fully protected,” Varadkar said.

nuc Nato chief calls on Russia to save INF nuclear missile treaty
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - 07-18-2019 03:05 PM - Replies (2)

Time is running out to save a key nuclear missile treaty with Russia, Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has told the BBC.
Mr Stoltenberg pledged a "measured, defensive" response if Russia did not come back into compliance with the deal by the 2 August deadline.
"We have to be prepared for a world... with more Russian missiles," he said.
The 1987 agreement signed by the US and USSR banned short and medium-range nuclear missiles.
President Trump announced the US would suspend its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in February, accusing Russia of breaching its terms.
Russia denied the allegation but suspended its own obligations shortly afterwards and announced plans to develop new weapons systems.

The system has been tested on a monkey that was able to control a computer with its brain, according to Mr Musk.
The firm said it wanted to focus on patients with severe neurological conditions.
But ultimately Mr Musk envisions a future of "superhuman cognition".

nuclear Three nuclear units of Kalinin NPP in Central Russia shut down
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - 07-18-2019 02:46 PM - Replies (2)

Three nuclear units of four have been disconnected at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Tver Region in Central Russia.”Due to the disconnection of one of current transformers on the 750-kilovolt open switchgear, the electric power line was disconnected. As a result, the first, the second and the fourth nuclear units of the Kalinin NPP were shut down,” a source at Russia’s EMERCOM said. Originally, it was reported that only two of the four nuclear power units were disconnected. The public information center of the NPP said that the radiation background was normal. No damage was caused to the equipment at the station. Earlier, news agencies reported that nuclear power units N1 and N2 at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant were shut down automatically due to a short circuit. EMERCOM later confirmed the information. Representatives of the Kalinin NPP also said that the nuclear units were to be switched on before July 19, after specialists find out the reasons of the incident. The Duty Dispatch Service of the town of Udomlya said that the fourth power unit was disconnected due to the rupture of the condenser seal of turbine No. 2.The Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant, built in 1984, is located in the north of the Tver region, 125 km from the city of Tver, on the southern side of Lake Udomlya. The NPP is 33 km far from Moscow and 400 km far from St. Petersburg. The station, which consists of four power units, provides electricity to Tver, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Vladimir, Cherepovets. the station also transits high voltage electricity.

read Google Expert to Senator Cruz: 15 Million 2020 Votes At Risk
Posted by: cockle - 07-18-2019 02:43 PM - Replies (2)

Big Tech’s biggest threat to democracy isn’t censorship or privacy: it’s election manipulation.

At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, “Google and Censorship through Search Engines,” Dr. Robert Epstein, who researches the impact of Google, informed the hearing that “upwards of 15 million votes” were in jeopardy in the 2020 election. During his testimony, Epstein told Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) that in 2016, Google gave at least 2.6 million votes to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, “through bias and search results.” He stressed that was the lowest number.

When questioned further by Cruz, Epstein gave a more concise answer: “The range is between 2.6 and 10.4 million votes depending on how aggressive they were in using the techniques that I’ve been studying, such as the search engine manipulation effect, the search suggestion effect, the answer bot effect, and a number of others. They control these and no one can counteract them. These are not competitive. These are tools that they have at their disposal exclusively.”

Cruz was shocked by this, responding, “If any headline comes out of this hearing, that should be it.”

Epstein further warned, “In 2020, you can bet that all of these companies are going to go all out, and the methods they are using are invisible, they’re subliminal, they are more powerful than most any effects I’ve ever seen in behavioral sciences and I’ve been in behavioral sciences for almost 40 years.”

violin 3 Turkish rights activists acquitted of terror-related charges
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - 07-18-2019 01:42 PM - Replies (3)

A court in Istanbul has acquitted the Turkey representative for Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and two other human rights activists of charges of engaging in terrorist propaganda.

The media advocacy group said Erol Onderoglu of Reporters Without Borders, Sebnem Korur Fincanci, head of the Human Rights Foundation and writer Ahmet Nesin were acquitted on Wednesday.

They were charged three years ago for taking part in a campaign to show solidarity with a pro-Kurdish newspaper, Ozgur Gundem, which was later closed down by Turkish authorities, AP said. The paper was accused of being a mouthpiece for the banned Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

RSF welcomed their acquittal, but tweeted that “three years of absurd proceedings was already a form of unjust punishment.”
