Star Mexico reports 539 deaths, 6,094 new cases

Mexico's Health Ministry has reported 6,094 new confirmed coronavirus infections and 539 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 295,268 cases and 34,730 deaths.

The government has said the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.

Russia on Sunday reported 6,615 new coronavirus cases, taking its nationwide tally of infections to 727,162.

The country's coronavirus crisis response centre said 130 people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 11,335. Russia said 501,061 people have recovered from the virus

The United States, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus, posted 66,528 new cases, a record for a 24-hour period, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The country has now recorded a total of 3,242,073 infections, the Baltimore-based university said in its latest data. The death toll stood at 134,729 with 760 additional deaths counted.

China on Friday rejected a new US invitation to join arms control talks with Russia. Washington has demanded that China take part in talks on a successor to the New START treaty, which caps the nuclear warheads the US and Russia possess.

Beijing said in response that it would only join the talks if the US reduced its nuclear arsenal to match China’s much smaller deterrent.

After closing because of the coronavirus pandemic, Walt Disney World Resort officially reopened two of its four parks -- Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom -- on a scorching Saturday. (Epcot and Hollywood Studios are set to reopen Wednesday).
Over the past week, all eyes have been on Disney World as it prepared for its reopening just one day shy of four months since it closed.

The Indian city of Bengaluru will be put under lockdown for a week starting Tuesday to contain a massive cluster of Covid-19 cases, authorities said.

"In view of a sudden surge of Covid-19 cases in Bengaluru and on the advice of the experts, it is decided to impose lockdown for a period of one week in Bengaluru Urban and Rural Districts starting from 8 p.m. on Tuesday," Karnataka’s Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said in a statement released Saturday.

A chain of errors made by the Iranian military resulted in the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane in January, investigators have said. The tragic incident began with an air defense unit misaligning its radar by 107 degrees.
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down shortly after departing from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran. An interim report by Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization has outlined the chain of mistakes by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which resulted in the death of all 176 people on board the airliner.
